Nairobi

Nairobi is the largest urban area in Kenya and is also the capital city of the African country. The city takes its name from the Nairobi River with the word actually being derived from a Maasai phrase ‘Enkare Nyrobi’ which means cold water. The city is one of the most populated in Africa and is the most populous city in Kenya with a population of over 3 million people.

The city has always been the centre of political and administrative activity ever since Kenya got independence in 1963. The city became the capital of the country by default after also serving as the capital of the British East Africa. The city was founded in 1899 by the British as a linking route from Mombasa to Uganda.

The city has always been important both politically and economically with the city being the hub of industrial activities in the region. It is home to the headquarters of important organizations like United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as well as the United Nations Office in Nairobi. The city is also home to the headquarters of a number of international and national organizations.

The city is blessed with some of the most breath taking locations which makes it a great tourist spot in Africa. Even though it does not make it to the list of top tourist attractions in Africa, it still has a number of locations that interest tourists.  From the world famous Nairobi National Park to Karen Blixen Museum and from Nairobi National Museum to Nairobi Serena, the city offers a number of great tourist attractions!
