Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is an extremely important city of Brazil and is the capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The city has a population in excess of 6.3 million which makes the city the second most populous in Brazil. Not only this, the city is also the sixth biggest city in the entire South American region while also makes it to the list of most populous cities in the world and stands at 26th in the list.

Rio has had a great history and has always been one of the most important cities of Brazil. The city served as the capital under the Portuguese rule while also remained the capital after getting the status of an independent nation. The city was replaced as the capital in 1960. Interestingly, the city is also mentioned as a World Heritage Site- a list presented by UNESCO.

The city is not only important to Brazil as far as the economy is concerned but its economy has worldwide impact. With the city having the second highest GDP in the country and probably the 30th largest in the entire world, Rio’s economy does contribute a lot. The city’s economy is blooming because of the presence of the biggest companies in the region in the city including headquarters of Petrobras and Vale.

With the city set to play host to the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2016, the city’s overall cultural brilliance will come to the fore. The city is already a great tourist attraction with people from all around the world visiting the city to witness the exotic beaches, the samba dances and the entertaining carnivals.
